Djokovic was able to develop the key skill ingredients required to play great tennis by starting with simple strokes that helped him to control the ball as he rallied. Over time this allowed him to develop the skills to effectively anticipate, track the ball, and adjust his mentality, movement and technique to many different shots and situations.
Coaches and parents alike, often become hung up on over convoluted intricacies of technique in the pursuit of creating strokes like that of the pros. While learning an aesthetically pleasing swing it is often at the expense of a well rounded skill set and and an enjoyable tennis experience for the player.
